Your Weekly Wash Day Ritual (Step-by-Step)

If you’ve ever dreaded wash day—or ended up with frizzy, tangled hair even after trying your best—you’re not alone. But wash day doesn’t have to feel like a battle. In fact, when you tailor your steps to your hair’s needs, it becomes a ritual. A time to reset, nourish, and connect with yourself. ✨

Here’s a full breakdown of what a healthy, intentional wash day looks like—especially if you have textured, curly, or dry-prone hair.

💧 Step 1: Pre-Poo (Pre-Cleanse Oil Treatment)

Best for: Dry, curly, or high-porosity hair.

Before you even touch the shampoo bottle, consider applying a lightweight oil (like coconut, olive, or almond oil) to your dry hair. This helps protect your strands from being stripped during shampooing and makes detangling a breeze.

  • Apply oil from roots to ends.

  • Finger-detangle or use a wide-tooth comb.

  • Cover with a cap for 15–30 minutes.

🌸 Personal Tip: I always pre-poo with warm olive oil and a few drops of rosemary oil—especially on dry winter weeks. It leaves my curls soft and ready for cleansing.

🧼 Step 2: Cleanse (Shampoo or Co-Wash)

Choose your cleanser based on your hair type and scalp needs:

Scalp & Hair Type Recommended Cleanser
Oily scalp, fine or straight hair Clarifying or sulfate-free shampoo
Dry scalp, textured or curly hair Moisturizing shampoo or co-wash
Product buildup or flakes Scalp scrub or exfoliating shampoo (1x/month)

✔️ Focus shampoo on your scalp, not your ends. Use the pads of your fingers—not nails—to massage and lift dirt and oil.

🧠 Reminder: Your scalp is skin. Keep it clean so your follicles stay happy and your hair grows strong.

🧴 Step 3: Condition (Hydrate + Detangle)

Use a rich conditioner after every cleanse. This restores moisture and helps detangle.

  • Apply from mid-lengths to ends.

  • Let it sit for 3–5 minutes.

  • Detangle with fingers or wide-tooth comb while it’s soaking in.

  • Rinse with cool water to seal the cuticle.

If your hair tangles easily, try sectioning your hair and working one section at a time. This makes a huge difference for textured hair.

🧪 Step 4: Deep Condition (1x per week)

Even if your regular conditioner is great, deep conditioning is essential—especially if you color, heat-style, or have curly/coily hair.

  • Apply a deep conditioner or hair mask.

  • Cover with a shower cap or heat cap.

  • Leave on for 20–30 minutes.

  • Rinse thoroughly.

🌿 Pro Tip: Add a tablespoon of aloe vera juice or honey to your deep conditioner for extra moisture and shine.

Step 5: Leave-In Conditioner

Think of this as the foundation of your styling routine. Leave-ins provide lightweight hydration, reduce frizz, and prime your hair for styling.

  • Apply a generous amount to damp (not soaking wet) hair.

  • Focus on mid-lengths and ends.

  • Comb through for even distribution.

✨ Choose a cream for thicker hair and a spray for fine or wavy textures.

💆‍♀️ Step 6: Style & Seal

This step depends on your texture and your goals:

  • Curly/Coily hair: Try the LOC or LCO method (Leave-in, Oil, Cream / Cream, Oil).

  • Wavy hair: Try a light mousse or gel for definition.

  • Straight hair: Use a smoothing serum or heat protectant if blow-drying.

Seal with a lightweight oil or butter if your hair is prone to dryness.

Hair Texture Suggested Styling Products
Curly / Coily Leave-in, oil, cream (LOC/LCO method)
Wavy Lightweight mousse or defining gel
Straight Smoothing serum or heat protectant

Optional: Scalp Massage + Oil Therapy

Once your hair is styled and drying, don’t forget your scalp! A few minutes of massage:

  • Stimulates blood flow

  • Supports hair growth

  • Feels amazing (self-care win)

Use a drop or two of rosemary, peppermint, or tea tree oil diluted in a carrier oil.
