6 Key Tips for healthy Hair

Everyone longs for shiny beautiful, healthy, hair. I know I do. I myself have been in the game for the last 4 years to no avail. I am what is called a lazy natural. I hate doing my hair which is why it is always in a bun or in recent times in a twisted updo with a claw clip (my fave hairstyle at the moment).

Over the past year I have learned several techniques and have discovered several products that has completely changed the game for me. I now have the hair of my dreams while still being able to be a lazy natural. I will be going over the 3 tips that changed my life and my hair.

1. Too much conditioning

One of the many tips that is given for healthy hair is regular deep conditioning. This is a tip that I wholeheartedly agree with. Because my hair is so dry I got into the habit of over conditioning my hair.

I ended up with hair that was too moisturized which caused damage to my hair by the repeated swelling and un swelling of excessive moisture.

This can also happen by leaving your hair wet for too long such as deep conditioning for hours at a time (lazy natural here) or even air drying your hair. This can lead to frizziness, brittleness, and dullness.

To fix this I now only deep condition for a max of 10 minutes and only use one deep conditioner a week. For some people deep conditioning their hair every week can actually be the cause of moisture overload and can make a huge difference in the health of your hair.

Adding a protein treatment into your rounding can help combat too much moisture which leads me into my second tip. This Gisou honey infused hair mask has small amounts of protein which is great if you have protein sensitive hair.

2. Moisture/Protein Balance

The balance of moisture and protein is key for all hair types to be healthy but most especially for curly hair. The firsts step in balancing the moisture and protein balance in your hair is to understand what both protein and moisture is meant to do for your hair.

80-90% of our hair is made up of a protein called keratin. Protein treatments helps to restore strength while providing protecting against further damage. Protein helps to repair the the damage in your hair.

Moisture on the other end helps to prevent breakage by improving the hair’s elasticity. A good hair moisturizer helps your hair thrive and keeps it bouncy, defined, and smooth.

Proper protein levels in your hair starts by eating a diet rich in good proteins such as chicken, eggs, and salmon.

Proper moisture levels in your hair starts by using water to hydrate your hair and using a leave-in conditioner such as the Gisou Honey Infused Leave-In Conditioner , where the first ingredient is water.

Pro tip: make sure your hair is damp when styling, too much water can dilute the products you’re using making them ineffective. And too little water will make the product hard to glide through your hair.

Also use a sealant such as an oil or butter to lock in the moisture.

3. Know your hair porosity

Understanding what your hair porosity is can be a bit tricky for new people starting their hair care journey. Check out my blog post that explains all of that, its importance and how to figure out our porosity.

Learning your hair porosity will help you build a hair regime that consists of the right techniques and products that your hair will love.

4. Scalp Massages/Scalp Treatment

Our hair grows from our scalp and maintaining a healthy scalp will ensure that your hair grows out thicker and longer. Scalp massages have been a key part of me being able to grow my hair longer. Check out this post on a complete guide to a healthy scalp.

5. Eat a healthy diet

Many studies have show that nutritional deficiencies in vitamins B12, D, iron, biotin, and other nutrients are associated with hair loss and hair thinness, especially iron for women. Eating adequate amounts of protein and getting enough calories can ensure that your hair stays strong elastic and healthy over time.

6. Consistency is Key

Last but not least, maintains consistency and having patience truly is key. This one is quite hard for me since I am not a patient person. Taking regular pictures of my hair throughout my journey has helped see the results of my hard work. I not only saw length but I was able to see how thicker my hair got, how much shinier and defined it is.
